SHS Hall of Fame induction is Saturday
The Sterling High School Athletic Hall of Fame will hold its 2013 induction ceremony at 3 p.m. Saturday at Centennial Auditorium. The public is invited to attend.
Individuals being inducted are Dan Kraft (Class of 1964), Ben Zulauff (’04), Christina Yemm (’05), Devon Carbaugh (’07) and Sam Megli (’07).
Teams being inducted are the 1965 boys track squad, the ’64 2-mile relay runners, the ’01 boys swimming squad and the 2006 girls swimmers. Swimming coaches Bob Ptak and Maggie Wike will also be inducted.
Report: Bears calling back Bevell, Trestman
According to ESPN reports, the Chicago Bears will bring in Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman for second interviews.
Writers name Griffin rookie of the year
Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was named the NFL Rookie of the Year by Pro Football Weekly and the Pro Football Writers of America.
Griffin III, 22, completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 3,200 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, only five interceptions and a passer rating of 102.4.
Illini announce Cubit as new coordinator
Illinois announced former Western Michigan coach Bill Cubit as the team’s new offensive coordinator.
Cubit served eight seasons as head coach at Western Michigan, where he went 51-47 overall and played in three bowls games but was let go.
Notre Dame’s Wood opts for NFL draft
Notre Dame tailback Cierre Wood will enter the NFL draft, forgoing his final year of eligibility.
Wood amassed 2,447 yards, the seventh-best career total in Irish history.
Illini fall to No. 23
in new poll
The University of Illinois fell 11 spots in the Associated Press top 25 poll to No. 23 this week.
The Illini (14-4) have lost four of the last six games, including Saturday’s 74-51 defeat against unranked Wisconsin.
