VILLA GROVE – Joseph Charles Mitsdarfer, 92, of Villa Grove, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at Carle Hospital in Urbana. He worked at the University of Illinois Agronomy Department, retiring in 1983 after 34 years.

He was born Dec. 20, 1920, in Crittenden Township, the son of Charles and Cecelia (Hausmann) Mitsdarfer. He married Marcella Letz on April 23, 1946. She preceded him in death on March 1, 2002. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Villa Grove.

Survivors include three sons, Richard J. (Carol) Mitsdarfer of Flushing, Mich., Kenneth C. (Jeanelle) Mitsdarfer of Charleston, and Dennis J. (Connie) Mitsdarfer of Villa Grove; three daughters, Carol A. (Michael) Miller of Champaign, Barbara M. (Bob) Smith of Dixon, and Linda K. (Mark) Jackson of Champaign; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Edward (Ann) Mitsdarfer of Philo and Robert (Ramona) Mitsdarfer of Longview; and one sister, Mary Ann (Bernie) Hammel of Champaign.

He also was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister.

The funeral was Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Villa Grove. Burial was at St. Mary Cemetery in rural Pesotum. Joines Funeral Home in Villa Grove handled arrangements.

A memorial has been established to the American Heart Association.
