Hazel M. DeVries Carlyle

STERLING – Hazel M. DeVries Carlyle died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling. She was a bookkeeper.

She was born Oct. 15, 1918, in New Holland, the daughter of Ray and Inez (Groharing) Machael. She married Jacob DeVries in 1936, in Morrison. He died in 1957. She later married Morris Carlyle in 1963. He died in 1987. She was a member of Rock Falls United Methodist Church, Church Women United, United Methodist Women, and Mariam Circle. Hazel enjoyed music and was an avid reader.

Surviving are her son, Donald R. DeVries of Clinton, Iowa; two daughters-in-law, Susan DeVries of Rock Falls and Kathleen DeVries of Clinton; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Wise saw collapse in support

Last week, Sterling Alderwoman Amy Viering attended her last meeting as a city official. She gave the usual praise one hears at such departures. But one compliment stuck out. At the end of her speech, she turned to City Administrator Scott Shumard and said, "You're awesome."
