Kevin K. ‘Doc’ Hummel
STERLING – Kevin K. “Doc” Hummel, 56, of Sterling, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling. He was employed by Crest Foods in Ashton before his disability, and disc jockeyed as Papa Doc DJ Service.
Kevin was born July 17, 1956, in Sterling, the son of Vincent and Kathryn (Bielema) Hummel. He retired as a hospital corpsman and petty officer first class from the Naval Reserve in 2001, serving a total of 24 years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam era and Operation Desert Storm. Doc was a member of Sterling American Legion; Rock Falls Veterans of Foreign Wars; Sauk Valley Detachment Marine Corps League; and Sterling Moose Lodge. He was a NASCAR fan, and rooted for the Chicago Bears, NIU Huskies, Fighting Illini and Navy Midshipmen football teams. Kevin loved spending time with his bulldog, Urlacher.
Survivors include life companion and forever friend, Beth A. Dewey of Sterling; three sisters, Karen (Ken Gould) Cowley of Sterling, Sue Larson of Morrison, and Holly (R.C.) Sutton of Glendale, Ariz.; five brothers, Larry (Jan Hummel) of Brooksville, Fla., Michael (Lynn) Hummel of Plant City, Fla., Gene Hummel of Modesto, Calif., Francis “Fritz” (Lindy) Hummel of Elk Grove, Calif., and Jon Mark (Lydia) Hummel of Orlando, Fla.; three “children,” Rachel Tate, Patrick and Zachary Dewey; three “grandchildren,” Aiden and Kennedy Tate and Evellyn Dewey; two aunts; one uncle; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
