POTEET, Texas – Epifania Vasquez Garcia of Poteet, Texas, was called home to be with the Lord Friday evening, Jan. 11, 2013, at the age of 96.

She is survived by her brothers, Jesse Vasquez (Cecilia) and family, and Inez Vasquez (Lupe) and family. She also will be missed by her loving children, Elida Toni Hilburn (George), Maria Luisa Salmon (Luis), Eulalio “Lalo” Garcia Jr. (Sally), Patricia Mazziotta, and Emilia Gutierrez (Rangel). She has 20 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Eulalio “Lalo” Garcia; parents, Luis and Rita Vasquez; stepmother, Santos Vasquez; son, Pete Vasquez; grandchildren, Corina Garcia, Lalo Pete Garcia, and Mark Muskgrave; sisters, Estefana Herrera and Maria Zamora; and brothers, Pete Garcia, Frank Vasquez, Didio Vasquez, and Esteban Vasquez.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m., with the rosary recited at 7 p.m., today at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton, Texas. The funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Phillip Benizi Catholic Church in Poteet. Burial will follow at Madre Dolorosa Cemetery in Poteet.

On pensions, Bivins and GOP far apart

Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, joined with many of his fellow Senate Republicans this week to reject a pension bill sponsored by Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. The measure passed 40-16. Bivins had a different reason for his no vote.
