College basketball: Wolverines dig hole too deep in Columbus

As has happened so often the past decade, Michigan’s dreams died Sunday in Columbus, Ohio.

This time it was the basketball team’s perfect 16-0 run and opportunity to take the nation’s No. 1 ranking. Both vanished as the Wolverines fell 56-53 at Value City Arena.

Michigan (16-1, 3-1 Big Ten) overcame a 21-point deficit to tie the game with 6 minutes left had another chance to tie with about 13.9 left, but Trey Burke missed a three when Michigan trailed 52-50.

Iowa 70, Northwestern 50: Aaron White led a balanced attack with 17 points as Iowa broke a three-game Big Ten losing streak in Evanston.

Josh Oglesby had 14 points, and Melsahn Basabe added 10 for the Hawkeyes (12-5, 1-3), who broke a five-game losing streak to Northwestern.

Dave Sobolewski had 14 points, and Tre Demps added 10 for the Wildcats (10-7, 1-3).

Iowa opened a 25-15 lead by halftime.

No. 22 Michigan State 66, Nebraska 56: Derrick Nix made two free throws with a minute left and finished with 17 points to lead Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich.

The Spartans (14-3, 3-1 Big Ten) have won three straight and kept the Cornhuskers (9-8, 0-4) winless in the Big Ten.

N.J.I.T. 83, Chicago State 78, 3OT: Dixon High School alumnus Matt Ross scored a team-high 19 points, but Chicago State came up short Saturday in Newark, N.J.

Ross logged 51 minutes and filled out a double-double with 11 rebounds. He and the Cougars (4-14) outscored the Highlanders (8-8) 29-20 in the second half.

Women’s basketball

Illinois State 71, Drake 66: Rock Falls native Jamie Russell scored just four points, but Illinois State scored a 71-66 victory over Drake on Sunday in Des Moines, Iowa.

Russell also had two rebounds and two steals.
