Charles D. ‘Charlie’ Marsh

DIXON – Charles D. “Charlie” Marsh, 78, of Dixon, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at Dixon Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. He was a mechanic for more than 40 years, and owned and operated Marsh Auto and Truck Repair in Dixon. After he retired as a mechanic, he opened and operated Charlie’s Tool Sales in Dixon for another 5 years.

Charlie was born July 14, 1934, in Springfield, the son of Ross and Elizabeth (Marsh) Wright. He later was legally adopted by his grandparents, George and Rebecca (Ash) Marsh. Charlie married Shirley Mae (Bollman) Helfrich on Oct. 1, 1982, in Dixon. He served in the Army from September 1951 to August 1954. He was a member of Dixon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 540. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and being outdoors.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Marsh; three sons, James (Michelle) Marsh, Robert Marsh, and Kenneth (Camille) Marsh; one daughter, Rhonda (Woody) Lenox; two stepsons, Scott (Julie) Helfrich and John (Alice) Helfrich; four stepdaughters, Linda (Larry) Long, Cheryl Helfrich, Barbara Helfrich, and Pam (David) Brooks; eight grandchildren; 16 stepgrandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; seven brothers; one granddaughter; one step-great grandson; and one step-granddaughter. 

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Preston-Schilling Funeral Home in Dixon. The graveside service, with full military honors provided by the combined veterans organizations, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Oakwood Cemetery in Dixon, with the Rev. Mike Jones, pastor of First United Methodist Church, Dixon, officiating. 

A memorial has been established.
