Hawks roll to NIBC title

Behind freshman A.J. Nordman’s 300 game – the first in school history – Oregon won its third Northern Illinois Bowling Conference Tournament championship in 4 years on Saturday at the Cherry Bowl in Rockford.

Nordman won the individual title by 1 pin over Rockford Lutheran senior Jacob Aldrich (1,295-1,294), while Hawk senior teammates Tyler Lathrop (1,263) and Dan Grimm (1,232) took third and fifth, respectively.

The Hawks pulled away from Rockford Lutheran in the sixth frame to win by 100, 5,932-5,832.

Oregon rolled a 3,008 in the morning session, and followed that up with a 2,924 in the afternoon.

All three Hawks in the top five rolled four 200+ games. Lathrop’s highs were 248 and 232, while Grimm’s best were 236 and 232. Other Oregon bowlers were Colton Russell (866 in five games), Justin Provo (784 in four games) and Joe Miranda (492 in three games).

Basketball

Stoughton (Wis.) 59, Sterling 45: The Golden Warriors dropped a nonconference game at Musgrove Fieldhouse, falling behind 19-11 after one quarter and never catching up.

Zach Rehmert hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 12 points to lead Sterling (7-11), and he also dished three assists. Zack Everett added seven points and six rebounds.

Erie 63, Bureau Valley 61: The Cardinals’ Jacob Johnston outscored the Storm’s Tommy Johnston 24-20 in a Three Rivers win for Erie on its Hall of Fame night.

The Cardinals (12-7, 4-2) led throughout, and hung on despite being outscored 21-15 in the fourth quarter. Connor Saad added 12 points for Erie.

Parker Neuhalfen scored 18 points and Brian Lange chipped in 13 for BV (14-9, 3-5).

Swimming

Helander, Interone earn wins: Dixon High School junior Aaron Helander, competing for the Byron co-op team, and Sterling senior Keanu Interone earned victories Saturday at the 16-team Rockford Jefferson Invitational.

Helander won the 100 butterfly (52.28), and Interone the 100 breaststroke (59.14).

Helander also took second in the 100 backstroke (53.37) and was a member of the third-place 200 freestyle relay (1:33.92) foursome.

Newman’s Warren Melton placed third in the 200 freestyle (1:47.82), and Sterling’s Keaton Dir was third in the 500 freestyle (5:08.53).
