Men's basketball: Hawkeyes unable to upset Spartans in Iowa City

Gary Harris had 14 points for the Spartans (13-3, 2-1 Big Ten), who hung on late for their eighth win in nine games.

Dawson ripped the ball away from Iowa freshman Mike Gesell and gave Michigan State a 58-56 lead with 49 seconds left.

Anthony Clemmons missed a free throw that would have tied it with 12 seconds to go and airballed a 3 at the buzzer. Iowa (11-5, 0-3) lost its third straight.

Zach McCabe led Iowa with 15 points and fellow reserve Melsahn Basabe added 14.

The Spartans took their first lead, 43-42, on a layup by Keith Appling off an Iowa turnover with just less than 9 minutes left in the first half.

Harris followed with a 3, and Adreian Payne threw down a one-handed dunk to put the Spartans ahead 48-45 with 6:15 left.

Michigan State blew the lead but tied it back up at 56 on Harris’ three free throws with 1:04 left.

Appling had 12 points, including four free throws in the final 20 seconds for Michigan State.

Northwestern 70, Penn State 54: Dave Sobolewski scored 18 points and Jared Swopshire added 17 as Northwestern handled cold-shooting Penn State in State College, Pa.

The Wildcats (10-6, 1-2) used a 25-4 run over an 11-minute span to lead by as many as 17 points, 33-16, in the first half. Penn State didn’t score a basket for nearly 7 minutes during that span.

Penn State (8-7, 0-3) shot just 31.6 percent (18-for-57) from the floor and was 3-for-15 beyond the arc.

Oregon 70, No. 4 Arizona 66: E.J. Singler scored 14 points and the Ducks overcame a slow start in Eugene, Ore., to hand the Wildcats their first loss.

Dominic Artis, Carlos Emory and Tony Woods had 10 points apiece for the Ducks (13-2, 2-0 Pac-12).

Mark Lyons scored 21 and Solomon Hill added 16 points to lead the Wildcats (14-1, 2-1).

The Wildcats jumped out to an 11-0 lead, but the Ducks outscored them 41-19 the rest of the first half to lead 41-30.
