Comets, Thunder sweep wrestling triangulars

The Dixon boys bowling team eclipsed 4,000 pins in a three-game series for the first time in more than 4 years in a 4,014-3,481 win over Rochelle on Thursday at Plum Hollow. 

The Dukes, who won the NIB-12 tournament on Monday, were led by Andrew Hamburg’s 717. Hamburg and Lucas Bonnette tied for high game with 258. Hamburg also had games of 205 and 254. Bonnette finished with a series of 696. All six bowlers had 600-plus series.

Contributing to the victory were Connor Allen (665), Josh Rex (663), Brandon Bonnette (649) and Ryan Dixon (624). 

Alex Demhoff had Rochelle’s top series of 616. 


Woodstock North 125, Sterling 111, Harlem 67: The Warriors took second in a three-team meet in Machesney Park, led by sophomore Keaton Dir and senior Keanu Interone.

Dir had a hand in four wins, taking the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.59) and 500 free (5:08.32) and teaming with Interone, Sam Wike and Andrew Blackburn to win the 200 medley relay (2:05.77) and 400 free relay (3:34.40).

Interone added a victory in the 100 breaststroke in 1 minute flat.

Byron 95, Freeport 85: Aaron Helander led the Tigers co-op in a dual meet in Freeport, winning two individual events and swimming a leg on a winning relay.

The junior from Dixon won the 100 freestyle (49.00 seconds) and 200 free (1:47.72), and also swam in the victorious 400 free relay (3:41.25). He also took part in the runner-up 200 free relay (1:43.90).


Newman sweeps two in Ashton: The Comets beat AFC 32-14 and topped Riverdale 37-24.

Brandon Ahlgrim, at 132 pounds, had the Comets’ lone pin against the Raiders, and he also had a pin against the Rams. Stephen Adamecz (138 pounds) also won two contested matches. 

AFC lost to Riverdale 36-27 despite winning five of the six contested matches. Anthony Hahn was the only Raider to win two contested matches on the night. He beat Newman’s Hunter Webb 9-1, then pinned Riverdale’s Brett Saathoff at 113 pounds. 

Oregon splits at home: The Hawks defeated Genoa-Kingston 56-18 and lost 45-30 to Stillman Valley in a pair of duals at the Blackhawk Center.

John Brink (195 pounds) and Colby Dace (285) both recorded a pair of pins for Oregon. Bailey Hoover (138) and Ashton Rutherford (145) added wins against G-K, while Taron Heck (160), Brandon Sklavanitis (170) and Travis Burke (220) won by pin against Stillman.

Fulton swept at home: The Steamers lost 51-21 to rival Morrison and 47-24 to Kewanee in a triangular in Fulton.

Aaron Field won two contested matches for Fulton, both decisions at 132 pounds. Zach Jenkins (182) added a decision win against Kewanee, while Jake Hoffman (113) picked up a pin against Morrison.

Morrison’s Austin Keller (145) and Adam Deter (285) won by pin against the Steamers, while Cody Vanderlaan (106) and Austin Shoup (182) won major decisions.

West Carroll wins twice, Polo splits at Durand: The Thunder beat the Marcos 72-12 and the host Bulldogs 54-24 in a triangular on the road. Polo beat Durand 46-24 in the other match.

Double-winners for West Carroll were Jeff Casey (126/132 pounds), Cody Yenney (152), Matt Ross (160), Jacob Carey (182/195) and Brandon Anderson (220); all but Anderson won with two pins, and Anderson won by pin and decision.

Zach Hagemann was the lone double-winner for Polo, winning by pin and technical fall at 170 pounds. Jesse Ditzler (126), Paul Smith (132), Jake Phillips (152) and Jeff Kimpel (182) added pins against Durand, and Ethan Cain won by tech fall against the Bulldogs.
