DIXON – The city’s Tourism Board is willing to participate in talks about uniting with Dixon Main Street and the Riverfront Commission.
A few efforts at such a merger, including one last spring, have failed, but the idea was revisited Tuesday at a Riverfront meeting. A public meeting with representatives from each organization is expected to be scheduled for later this month.
Tourism Board President Vicky Turner said the idea will be introduced again to its members at next Monday’s meeting. Turner has not been approached by any of the groups regarding the idea, nor has she had a chance to speak to her board members about it.
“We are always in favor of anything positive and wonderful in the community,” said Turner, who has served for about 4 years on the Tourism Board, but will run her first meeting as president. “We love to partner with groups in and outside of our community if it’s viable, but there are a lot of logistics to figure out if this should or could work.”
The public meeting to discuss possible consolidation would allow for up to two representatives from each organization and two city commissioners to determine if services can be consolidated. It will be led by Mayor Jim Burke.
About 2 years ago, the Tourism Board decided a merger was not workable, voting to cease talks on any action to consolidate services. At that time, it was determined Tourism focuses more on promotion outside the community than Dixon Main Street and the Riverfront, Turner said.
“We all have our own separate mission statements and areas we concentrate on.”
Josh Albrecht, executive director of Dixon Main Street, said each organization hosts and promotes events and raises funds, meaning there is some overlap in objectives.
“I think we would be more effective working as one in at least some capacity,” Albrecht said. “We need to sit down and figure out what that is.”
The Dixon Tourism Board meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the tourism office, 106 W. River St.
