Polo’s Hagemann invited to Australia

Polo senior Zach Hagemann plans to join Marcos teammate Ethan Ditzler in participating in the Down Under Sports Tournaments this summer.

Hagemann received an invitation and must raise $6,000 to take part in two games over 7 days in Australia. The trip also includes a 3-day stop in Waikiki, Hawaii.

Illinois tabs Cubit
as new coordinator

According to an ESPNChicago.com report, Illinois has chosen former Western Michigan coach Bill Cubit to be the team’s offensive coordinator, following the firing of Chris Beatty on Saturday.

Cubit coached Western Michigan for eight seasons, going 51-47 overall with three bowl-game berths. The Illini (2-12, 0-8 Big Ten) ranked 12th in the conference in points (16.7) and total offense (296.7) last season.

Montana’s son
picks Tulane

Nick Montana, the son of legendary Hall of Fame NFL quarterback Joe Montana, announced Monday that he will play for Tulane next season.

Montana played for Mt. San Antonio College last season, earning first-team All-Southern California Football Association honors. He played high school ball at Oaks Christian, leading the team to a 27-1 overall record as a starter, including a CIF championship as a junior. As a senior, he passed for 2,636 yards and 34 touchdowns.

Rondo suspended for game against Knicks

Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo was suspended for Monday night’s game against the New York Knicks for making contact with a game official and failing to cooperate with a league investigation.

Lakers’ Howard Gasol out indefinitely

Los Angeles Lakers stars Dwight Howard and Paul Gasol are out indefinitely with injuries, the team announced Monday.

Howard has a torn labrum and will be re-evaluated in a week. Gasol has a concussion.

No. 17 Notre Dame edges No. 21 Cincy

Jerian Grant scored 19 points, lifting No. 17 Notre Dame to a 66-60 victory over No. 21 Cincinnati on Monday at Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati.

Cleveland State beats UIC in Horizon action

Freshman Bryn Forbes scored 14 points to help Cleveland State defeat Illinois-Chicago 60-50 in Horizon League play Monday in Cleveland.

On pensions, Bivins and GOP far apart

Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, joined with many of his fellow Senate Republicans this week to reject a pension bill sponsored by Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. The measure passed 40-16. Bivins had a different reason for his no vote.
