Sabas M. Hernandez

SAN JUAN, Texas – Sabas M. Hernandez, 84, of San Juan, Texas, formerly of Sterling, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at his home. He was a crane operator at Northwestern Steel and Wire Co. in Sterling for several years. 

He was born Dec. 5, 1928, in Donna, Texas, a son of Sixto and Eusevia (Moreno) Hernandez. He served in the Army during the Korean War.

Survivors include his children, Carol (Tom) Collins of Davenport, Iowa, and Connie (Dale) Bland, Bill Cruz, and Ernesto (Mary Kay) Hernandez, all of Sterling; stepsiblings, Erma, Gloria, Joe, and Tacho; his companion, Carmen Gutierrez of San Juan; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, and his siblings.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by the funeral at 10 a.m., Friday at McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls, with the Rev. Scott Porter of Abiding Word Church in Sterling, officiating. Full military honors will be accorded at the funeral home. Private burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery.
