Once again, pets free to roam at Dixon dog park

Park 4 Paws fee dropped; jumble nixed after 1 year

DIXON – The Park District has agreed to leave the gate open at the dog park.

Users of Park 4 Paws, just east of Washington Avenue, no longer will be required to pay $50.

Since 2011, the public has been locked out of the park. Those who paid a fee were given a key.

But quite often, the entrance gate was left unlocked, allowing some who didn’t pay a fee to still use the park.

“Anyone can use the park now, 24 hours a day,” Carey said.

The district instituted the fee as a way to keep the pet park open when costs were becoming prohibitive. Carey said the park since has been made smaller.

Also Monday, board members decided to nix the weekly jumble sale, which was hosted each Friday at Haymarket Square this past summer.

The first-year citywide rummage sale was popular initially, Carey said, but fizzled toward the end of June and into July.

“There is a possibility we have one jumble sale this summer, but it will no longer be a weekly thing,” Carey said.

Budget constraints led the park board to pass on purchasing a canopy for the farmers market. The idea was introduced by Vice President Ron Pritchard at past meetings.

With a capital revenue budget of $157,200, buying netting at Reynolds Field, a Toro lawn mower, a small pickup truck, new software for administration computers, and making repairs to its maintenance building were listed as priorities for infrastructure projects.

The park district also decided to keep its own girls fast-pitch softball league, instead of combining with an independent travel league in Dixon. Both leagues share field time at Ballou Park. Carey said the park district’s league grew to 13 teams last year and has been successful.
