SHELTER COVE, Calif. – Tall, lean, handsome, strong. Smart, quiet, compassionate, caring.

Herb was born in Rockford and grew up in Dixon. Known as J. Herbert to Midwestern family and friends, he was educated at St. Mary, Dixon High School, and St. Ambrose College, and graduated from the University of Illinois. With this solid education, he became a registered civil engineer. He moved to California and was a bridge builder for Cal Trans. He moved into the private sector and formed his own company.

In 1970, Herb married the love of his life, Karin LeBecq. He cherished his role as father to Leigh Gwyn, father-in-law to Frank Wilson, and grandpa to Aidan LeBecq Wilson.

Along with his wife, Herb leaves his brother and sister-in-law, Dennis Delaney Dunphy and Caroline (Schauer) Dunphy; and niece and nephew, Mary Kathyrn and Dennis. He is remembered with love and affection by his sister-in-law, Janet Porteous; and niece and nephew, Jill and Pete Fiore and their family, Daniel, John, Sierra, Edward, and Marie. He also leaves cousins, Nancy Long Morrisey, Shelley Johnson, Lisa Jordan, Mary Ann Conklin, J.B. Long, and Hubert Dunphy; and close friends, Rita and Bob Rao, Tom Villiger, Andrew and Veon Filak, and Margie and Sid Torrence.

A Memorial Mass will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Redwoods Monastery in Whitethorn, Calif.

James Herbert Dunphy, one of the good guys.
