DIXON – The downtown streetlights will see new banners this spring.
The Dixon Main Street 2013 Streetlight Banner program is under way, with a goal of putting up 40 new banners featuring historic images from the community. Space will be provided for up to 80 banners if the demand is there.
The new designs have been created by artist Neil Aspinall, who is nationally recognized for his design work at Coca-Cola, Time magazine and USA Today, and local graphic designer Rick Masterson.
The inspiration for portraying historic images was derived from Dixon’s downtown being named recently to the National Register of Historic Places.
Josh Albrecht, executive director of Dixon Main Street, said four designs will be created. The first features Dixon High School, a second displays the downtown from the north side of the Rock River, another portrays the Nachusa House and the arch viewed from the Lee County Courthouse lawn and the fourth will relate to Ronald Reagan.
These banners will be on display on Galena, Hennepin and First avenues.
Banners now hanging downtown will be taken down. They were used for 3 years, but the Main Street design committee wants the new ones to stay up for just a year.
“We feel the current ones lost their appeal in the third year,” Albrecht said. “For the aesthetics of downtown, we want to try to change out more frequently.”
Sponsors will be able to include their company logo on the banners. The current banners feature only the company’s name.
