Boys roundup: Thunder's Casey, Hawks' Sklavanitis earn honors at Polo

Two local wrestlers win MVP

Paced by a pair of MVP performances from Jeff Casey and Brandon Sklavanitis, the West Carroll and Oregon wrestling teams finished second and third, respectively, at the Polo Invitational on Saturday.

Glenbard North’s JV team won with 185 points, 15 more than the Thunder. The Hawks were next with 158 in the 18-team tourney.

Casey was voted the lower-weights MVP after taking the title at 126 pounds. West Carroll also got a title from Zach Hartman at 132.

Sklavanitis won his fourth straight title at Polo, this time at 170 pounds, and was named upper-weights MVP. Teammate John Brink won a title at 182.

AFC’s Jake Kaecker took top honors at 152 pounds.

Warriors 15th at Sycamore: Sterling amassed 298 points and finished 15th at the 23-team Sycamore Invitational.

Isaac Anderson took third at 113 pounds. Curtis Lilly was fourth at 285. Austin Olalde (132) and Josh Villareal (195) were sixth.

Boys basketball

Rock Island 86, Sterling 32: Micah Miller scored seven points for the Golden Warriors (7-9) in a road loss to the Rocks.

Brian Richardson led Rock Island (12-3) with 21 points.

Winnebago 78, Oregon 72, OT: The Hawks nearly dealt the visiting Indians their first loss, only to be outscored 10-4 in overtime at the Blackhawk Center.

Caleb Mowry poured in 32 points to lead Oregon (9-6, 0-3 Big Northern West).

Jacoby Posley led Winnebago (15-0, 3-0) with 32.

Boys bowling

Hamburg leads Dukes: Andrew Hamburg had the top game (256) and series (673) at the Dixon Toughman tournament, leading the Dukes to fourth place in the 13-team event.

Freeport won the tourney with a 5,898 total.

Oregon was sixth at 5,374. The Hawks’ Dan Grimm had a 671, second only to Hamburg.

Men’s basketball

Sauk Valley 83, Kankakee 70: Jalen Riley tossed in 26 points on the road, including eight 3-pointers, in the Skyhawks’ first game of the second half of their season.

Daven Ottley had 24 points and 11 rebounds for Sauk (9-5). Magd Owayed had 11 points and 14 boards.

Cody Behrens had nine points and 11 rebounds, and Carlos Hendrix added nine points and 12 assists.

Anthony Williams led Kankakee with 16 points.
