Small acreage course planned
MALTA – University of Illinois Extension staffers will organize a “Putting Small Acres to Work” workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 26 at Kishwaukee College Conference Center, 21193 Malta Road.
Participants may choose from two general sessions and nine breakout sessions. The general sessions are analyzing your assets, understanding available resources, rules and regulations that may apply to property; and markets matter, with information about marketing products.
Breakout sessions include:
■ Your Land – Your Choice: Peggy Doty, Extension educator, will share ideas about managing property for a specific lifestyle while adding money.
■ Versatile Vegetables: Jeff Wielert of Bountiful Blessings Farm Produce will discuss preparing for vegetable production, and letting markets drive planning.
■ Small Livestock: Cindee Robinson from R Family Farm will discuss raising small livestock and direct marketing to customers.
■ The Buzz about Beekeeping: Phillip Raines will discuss how bees can bring owners money.
■ Fruitful Fruits: Roger Peucker, owner of Roscoe Orchard, will discuss picking fruit to make a profit.
■ Value Added: Ideas to make from the produce you grow: Marilyn Csernus, Extension educator, will talk about product ideas, cottage industry law, and food safety issues.
■ Can you see money through the trees?: Doty will discuss managing woodlands for beauty.
■ Year Round Growing: Mary Brubach of Susie’s Garden Patch will discuss vegetable gardening throughout the year.
■ Starting a Business: Ellen Phillips, Extension educator, will outline the basics of a business plan.
The cost is $30 for adults and $10 for each additional family member.
Fees include lunch for each registrant and materials for one family.
Registration is due by Friday.
The cost for late registration or walk-ins is $45 each, and does not include lunch.
