JOLIET (AP) — A Will County judge will decide if a suburban Chicago woman was abusive for using a belt to discipline her child — the son of former Chicago Bull Eddie Curry — last year after he got into trouble at school.

The SouthtownStar reports (http://bit.ly/VymK8G) Thursday that 30-year-old Korie Kellogg of Mokena was arrested after taking the 10-year-old to a hospital to treat swelling bruises on his back, leg and face. Police were called after a hospital staff member saw the injuries.

Assistant State's Attorney Adam Capelli said punishment is up to the parent, but Kellogg's actions "rise to the level of unreasonable."

Under questioning by defense attorney Jeff Tomczak, the boy said he was not afraid of his mother.

Judge Daniel Rozak said he would issue a verdict Jan. 18.
