Firefighters work to put out a fire that destroyed a mobile home Tuesday afternoon at the corner of Cherokee Lane and Rock River Drive at Rock River Estates, 291 state Route 2, between Dixon and Sterling.

The Dixon Rural Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 2:54 p.m. and worked for 4 hours to put out the blaze, Assistant Chief Sid Aurand said. The man who lives at the home by himself and was home at the time the fire started was not injured, Ken Hauck, owner of Rock River Estates, said.

The man was taken away from the scene by ambulance, though, Aurand said.

The blaze destroyed the home and caused damage to the exterior of three adjacent homes, Aurand and Hauck said. No cause has been determined; the fire department has contacted the state fire marshal, Aurand said.

Fire departments from Dixon, Sterling, Rock Falls, Polo and Mount Morris were on the scene. Departments in Amboy and Milledgeville provided backup.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
