CHAMPAIGN (AP) — Authorities in Champaign say a man fleeing police fell through the ice over a retention pond and later died.

The Champaign County coroner identified the man as 20-year-old Kenneth Brown Jr. of Champaign. The News-Gazette reports that Brown died early Wednesday at an Urbana hospital. Police say officers were called to a deli on a disorderly person report. Authorities say Brown fled and ran onto the ice when he saw officers.

Champaign Police Lt. Bob Rea says Brown fell "right through the ice." Fire fighters and a dive and rescue team pulled Brown from the water Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures were about 20 degrees outside.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
