Area restaurateurs buy Rock Falls’ Long Shot

Candlelight Inn partners promise fresher food, longer hours

ROCK FALLS – Long Shot soon will be the place to go for the best burgers in the area, according to its new owner.

Matt Prescott, owner of Candlelight Inn restaurants in Sterling, Rock Falls and Clinton, Iowa, and his business partner, Tim Kendrick, bought the bar Monday, Prescott said.

Bob Atilano of Rock Falls owned the bar for about 6 years, Prescott said.

The bar’s menu will change, and the kitchen will be open longer hours. Hamburgers and large, fresh chicken wings will be offered. Everything except the french fries will be fresh and never frozen, he said.

“I think our burgers are going to be the best around.”

Some renovations might be done, but Prescott declined to specify. “It’s going to be a process,” he said.

Prescott, 38, and Kendrick, 36, are from Sterling.

The bar was “just a good opportunity,” said Prescott, who owned the building once before, after he bought it from the Elks in 2000 or 2001.

“We bought it planning to put a restaurant here,” he said. “Then we got a piece of land by our current restaurant in Rock Falls.”

He owned the building for 2 or 3 years before selling it to Atilano, he said.

Atilano couldn’t be reached for comment Monday.

The building was built in the 1940s or ‘50s by John Jul, who opened a restaurant called Jul’s Danish Farm Motel. The Elks Club bought it from Jul in the 1980s, Prescott said.

Despite rumors circulating in the community, Prescott is not selling or closing any of his restaurants.

“As it stands, I would be shocked if I ever closed a restaurant,” he said. “They are not for sale and they are not closing.”

The New Long Shot

Long Shot, at 3312 Rock Falls Road, is under new ownership. Matt Prescott, owner of Candlelight Inn restaurants, and his business partner, Tim Kendrick, plan an expanded menu.

The bar will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Saturday, with the kitchen opening an hour later and closing an hour earlier; and from noon to 10 p.m. Sunday, with the kitchen closing an hour earlier.
