John H. Kennaugh

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – John Harrington Kennaugh, born March 4, 1923, in Rockford, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, in Grand Rapids, Mich.

John graduated from Dixon High School in 1941. He served in the Army Air Force for 3 years during World War II in the United States and the China Burma India theater. Through the GI Bill of Rights, he received an engineering science degree at North Central College in Naperville. After finishing his third year of college, he and Jean Hitchcock were married on June 4, 1949.

John served as party chief for Wight & Co. Engineers for 3.5 years; city manager of Buchanan, Mich., for 3 years, and of Wyoming, Mich., for 6.5 years; and executive secretary of the Michigan Grand River Watershed Council in Lansing, Mich., for 10 years. He served in the Sedimentation Control Program, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, in Lansing, for 11 years; and was an associate Realtor for Acorn Realty. He retired in 1991 to Lakeview, Mich.

John served in several leadership roles in both the Evangelical-United Brethren Church and United Methodist local churches, including being a delegate to the General Conferences. John had many hobbies. He also was an avid and respected volunteer.

Surviviors include his wife; daughters, Carole J. (David) Dow of Ada, Mich., and Laurie A. (Bob) Broughan of Sacramento, Calif.; sons, John A. (Kris) Kennaugh of Lansing, and Paul F. (Amy) Kennaugh of Eaton Rapids, Mich.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and family friend, Burkhardt Forbrich.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Zildah Kennaugh; and brother, Marvin L. Kennaugh. 

The Kennaugh family will receive guests from 9 to 11 a.m. Jan. 5 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 3334 S. Breton Road, Kentwood, Mich., followed by the memorial service at 11 a.m. at the church. Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Service in Grand Rapids, Mich., handled arrangements.
