Time to get skates ready

So, sharpen those ice-skating and snowball throwing skills and join us at the Silver Skates Ice Skating Derby and Snowball Archery Contest from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Jan.12 at the Centennial Park lagoon, Avenue D and East 11th Street.

This skating derby is for boys and girls ages 6 to 15. The contestants will compete in races of various lengths depending upon age group, and the best time will qualify them for awards. 

There will be a boys and girls division for each age catergory. It is not necessary for the contestants to be a good skate. All participants will receive an award.

The Snowball Archery Contest will be held in conjunction with the Silver Skates Ice Skating Derby. The contest is open to boys and girls ages 6 to 15 years. There will be a boys and girls division for each age group.

Participants will test their ability to accurately hit an archery target with a snowball from various distances. Medals and placement ribbons will be awarded. Those not placing will receive merit ribbons.

Interested contestants may compete in both the Ice Skating Derby and the Snowball Archery Contest throughout the afternoon in their respective age groups. There is no registration fee. These two events are contingent on the weather, so check with the Coloma Township Park District office at 815-625-0272 to make sure they are going to be held as planned.

The 37th annual Youth Bowling Tournament will be Jan. 21. Each bowler will compete in three games with the use of their own handicaps from previous league play, or a handicap will be established by the tournament judges. Boys and girls compete separately in their own age bracket from age 6 to 18. Trophies will be awarded.

Registration will be from 9 to 9:30 a.m. the day of the tournament at Paone’s Blackhawk Lanes, 2325 E. Lincolnway in Sterling. The tournament starts at 9:30 a.m.  The cost is $12.

The district’s snow sculpture contest will run until Feb. 28. After completing a snow sculpture, call the park district administrative office at 815-625-0272 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m Mondays through Fridays ,and someone will come out and take a picture of the snow sculpture. Prizes will be awarded on the basis of size, detail, and creative ideas at the end of the contest. The Snow Sculpture Contest is open to participants of all ages.
