Rock Falls announces Class of 2013
Rock Falls High School announced its Hall of Fame Class of 2013, to be inducted at 8 p.m. Jan. 5 at the high school.
Wrestler Willie Dale (Class of 2002), basketball star Ross Johnson (‘88), track standout Lisa Pope (‘81) and multisport stars Art Heinze (‘58) and Robbie Minor (‘03) will be enshrined.
Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Josh Brent was indicted Wednesday by a Dallas County grand jury for intoxication manslaughter.
Brent, 24, was behind the wheel of his Mercedes-Benz on Dec. 8 when it hit a curb and flipped in Irving, Texas, killing Cowboys and former Illinois teammate Jerry Brown Jr., a member of the practice squad.
Brent is free on bail, which was reduced from $500,000 after the accident to $100,000. The maximum sentence for intoxication manslaughter is 20 years in prison, but Brent could be eligible for probation.
Red Sox trade for Bucs closer Hanrahan
The Boston Red Sox acquired Joel Hanrahan from the Pittsburgh Pirates as the keystone to a six-player deal.
Also heading to Beantown is infielder Brock Holt. The Pirates will gain pitchers Mark Melancon and Stolmy Pimentel, infielder Ivan De Jesus and utilityman Jerry Sands.
Hanrahan, 31, recorded 76 saves over the last two seasons, fourth-most in the National League.
Site of 2014 games rocked by earthquake
A gas pipeline that feeds a power station in Sochi, Russia, exploded early Wednesday morning and, in an unrelated incident, a magnitude 5.3 earthquake rocked the city.
Sochi is to be host of the 2014 Winter Olympics, scheduled for Feb. 7-23.
Nadal’s return delayed by virus
After sitting out 7 months with a knee injury, Rafael Nadal’s return has been delayed by a stomach virus.
He was scheduled to play in an exhibition in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, today, but he withdrew Tuesday because he has a fever and his doctor advised him to rest.
