CHICAGO (AP) – A winter storm is expected to dump up to a foot of snow across portions of southern Illinois overnight.

The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning on Tuesday for the southern part of the state, and says travel could be difficult through today.

Between 6 and 12 inches of snow are expected.

with some places getting more than a foot of snow. The weather service says the heaviest snow is likely between 10 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday. Wind gusts up to 40 mph could cause zero visibility in some areas.

The storm is part of a larger system that made for a sloppy Christmas Day trek in parts of the nation’s midsection.

The Chicago area got just a dusting of lake effect snow on Tuesday.
