James E. Sturgill

ALEDO — James E. Sturgill, 96, of Aledo, died Saturday, Dec. 22, at Aledo Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. He was a police officer in Aledo and police chief in Prophetstown, retiring from the force in 1974.

James was born Sept. 30, 1916, in Mountain City, Tenn., the son of Benjamin and Cora (Dollar) Sturgill. He married Maxine Mack, then Jacqueline Murphy, then Bernadine R. Sippel-Ashpole on Sept. 30, 1964, in Fairview Center. She died May 21, 1999.

He was a member of Leon United Methodist Church in Prophetstown.

Survivors include three daughters, Rita Jo (Steve) Crick of Louisville, Ky., Phyllis (Dean) Epperly of Wheaton and Lynn (Jim) Frost of Eustis, Fla.; one son, Doug Sturgill of Aledo; one stepdaughter, Lynn (Rowan) Butts of Rock Falls; one stepson, Ronald (Mary) Ashpole of Kewanee; a sister, Irene Negley; 14 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Gritten; a brother, Fred Sturgill, two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter in infancy.

Visitation is for 1 p.m. Friday, followed by the funeral at 2 p.m. at Leon Methodist Church in Prophetstown with the Rev. Cheri Stewart, pastor of Prophetstown United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown.

A memorial has been established to Leon United Methodist Church.
