STERLING – Douglas E. Martin, 73, of Sterling, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling. He was employed at Northwestern Steel & Wire Co. in Sterling for 35 years, retiring as a machinist.

He was born Dec. 13, 1939, in Rock Falls, the son of Perle Allen and Marie (Henry) Martin. He married Linda L. Jones on Oct. 11, 1958.

Surviving are his children: Kimberly A. (Tony) Warren, Jodi Pontnack, Mark D. Martin, and Susan (Brad) Steinhagen, all of Sterling; his sisters, Judy Davis and Evelyn Bay, both of Rockford, and Carolyn Quinn of Las Vegas; his brothers, Gary Martin of Rock Falls and Steven Martin and Donald Martin, both of Chicago; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Margaret and Delores; and brother, Eddie.

There will be no services. Cremation rites will be accorded. Arrangements were handled by McDonald Funeral Home & Crematory in Rock Falls.

On pensions, Bivins and GOP far apart

Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, joined with many of his fellow Senate Republicans this week to reject a pension bill sponsored by Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. The measure passed 40-16. Bivins had a different reason for his no vote.
