Lead investigator fired after probe

The NCAA has fired Abigail Grantstein, its lead investigator during the organization’s eligibility probe of UCLA freshman basketball star Shabazz Muhammad.

Her firing comes a month after an attorney overheard Grantstein’s boyfriend loudly discussing Muhammad’s case on an airplane in early August, before key facts of the case had been gathered. The boyfriend indicated that Grantstein would make sure Muhammad never became eligible because he broke rules.

The NCAA did, in fact, declare Muhammad ineligible, citing a violation of its amateurism rules, specifically that he accepted impermissible travel benefits on three unofficial recruiting trips. But it later reinstated Muhammad, who had already sat out three games by that point.

Brewers sign veteran lefty Gorzelanny

The Milwaukee Brewers signed left-handed reliever Tom Gorzelanny to a 2-year contract Friday.

The 30-year-old Gorzelanny went 4-2 with a 2.88 ERA and one save in 45 games with Washington last season. He posted a 1.33 ERA in 27 innings pitched out of the bullpen following the All-Star break.

Cubs lose two pitching prospects

A pair of waiver claims cost the Cubs two minor-league pitching prospects on Friday, but the team still needs to open another space when the signings of Edwin Jackson and Carlos Villanueva are finalized.

The roster stands at 39 after the Rangers’ claim of left-handed reliever Jeff Beliveau and San Francisco’s claim of right-hander Sandy Rosario.
