Baltimore orioles to be discussed

FREEPORT – Northwest Illinois Audubon Society programs will have two, free programs in January.

A discussion about the Baltimore oriole and supporting migratory birds will be at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 8 at St. John Church of Christ, 1010 S. Park Blvd.

Andy Paulios, coordinator of the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Initiative at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource’s Bureau of Wildlife Management, will be the speaker. Refreshments will be served. Call Eve at 815-821-1886 for more information.

Tracks, Scats and Anything Else, an outdoors program about animal signs, will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Jan. 19 at the Mogle Center at Oakdale Nature Preserve. The preserve is 3 miles south of Freeport on Baileyville Road. Participants should dress for the outdoors, including warm and dry footwear.

Wise saw collapse in support

On pensions, Bivins and GOP far apart

Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, joined with many of his fellow Senate Republicans this week to reject a pension bill sponsored by Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. The measure passed 40-16. Bivins had a different reason for his no vote.
