Sheriff: Cellphones factor in fatal crash

Published: Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012 1:15 a.m. CST

OREGON – Distracted driving was a factor in a head-on crash that killed two area women on Thanksgiving Day, Ogle County Sheriff Michael Harn said.

Both drivers, Leslie A. Wallace, 28, of Oregon, and Christina L. Nave, 31, of Mount Morris, were using cellphones when the crash occurred in the 1000 block of West Pines Road about a mile and a half west of Oregon.

“One was talking and one was texting,” Harn said.

Both drivers were alone in their cars and died at the scene.

Wallace was eastbound around 9:44 p.m. when she crossed the center line and struck Nave, he said.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
