Freedom of religion, not from religion

Published: Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012 1:15 a.m. CDT

Regarding a Dec. 15 letter about the Nativity scene at the Dixon courthouse, did someone call this unconstitutional? Have you read the Constitution and studied the authors who believed in freedom of religion?

As a tradition, is this the first time someone has complained about this? If we served the Christian God, wouldn’t the Nativity scene remain all year?

God has been taken out of too many things and places. Nascar races still have a prayer to almighty God before their races; who else does this? Schools aren’t allowed to read the Bible anymore, and children used to read from it. I’m 75 years old, but I remember as a child we said the Pledge of Allegiance and the Lord’s Prayer. We never heard of a gunman coming into a school killing children and teachers.

Now, when a Christian wants God back in our schools, the Ten Commandments posted, or statues honoring our fallen war heroes, we’re told we are prejudiced, racists or it’s unconstitutional.

I say it’s time we stand up and tell you and other atheists, Muslims, etc., that living in America means freedom of religion, not from religion.

If you don’t like Christmas trees, Nativity scenes, and crosses, then don’t look at them. You should consider living in Iran, Egypt or a Muslim country where all you have to worry about is keeping your head fastened to your shoulders – see how that works for you.

Christ is our rock; we stand by his law. If the masses of people coming here from other countries would live by moral, Christian principles, we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in – including Washington, D.C.

If our children were in church on Sundays instead of playing outside, shopping, doing yard work with their families, then perhaps evil would not prevail in America. We would have a true, civilized society.
