Nation based on Christian standards
In response to Matt Fichter’s letter on Dec. 15 regarding the Nativity scene being unconstitutional, it would be good for you to really study the history of this country and its founders. First off, the only “granite wall” is in your mind.
The First Amendment states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. ...” I.e., it shall not dictate a religion such as the countries in Europe did at that time.
Most countries had a state religion; in Germany, when it was under Roman Catholic authority, the mandated religion was Roman Catholic. When it was under Lutheran leadership, it was Lutheran. That was the meaning for 200 years, until some ill-intentioned people twisted and turned the meaning of words to suit their agenda.
