Volunteers needed for VITAS hospice

Published: Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012 1:15 a.m. CST

LASALLE – VITAS Innovative Hospice Care has opportunities for volunteers.

VITAS volunteers visit patients in their homes, nursing homes or assisted living communities, provide support to veterans at the end of life, cut and style patients’ hair, play a patient’s favorite tune, bring their well-behaved pet for a visit, do some household repair or help in the office.

Bereavement volunteers make visits and phone calls to loved ones, sew Memory Bears and help with memorial services.

Volunteers will be trained in listening skills, family dynamics and the right words to say to terminally-ill patients and their caregivers. Assignments are made according to the volunteer’s location preference and work or family schedule.

Contact Rosana Madrigal, manager of volunteer services, at 815-220-0021 or email to to register for a free volunteer orientation class.
