Good Fellows seeks gifts for holiday project

It is Christmas time in Dixon – a time to reflect on happy childhood memories of going shopping on Saturday in downtown Dixon. Woolworth’s, Ford Hopkins, Kline’s, J.C. Penney, Snow White Bakery and Cleadon’s were a few of my favorite stores. Music would play, snow would fall, and the streets were busy with Christmas shoppers.

Well, Good Fellows of Lee County is a part of Dixon history. The Good Fellows of Lee County was started by an individual who went to the Telegraph and requested names of families who needed help and names of families wishing to help. All information was kept anonymous.

Now, 100 years later, Good Fellows of Lee County is still coordinating families who need help with families who wish to help. Families who need help apply online, and families who wish to help drop toys or clothes into the Good Fellow round barrels located in stores and schools.

Another way to help is to take a tag off the tree located in the Telegraph office in Dixon or Dixon Wal-Mart and buy gifts. Cash donations are also greatly appreciated, as this goes to buy food for the baskets. Cash donations can be sent to Harriet Halgren, 1521 S. College Ave., Dixon, IL 61021, or dropped off at the Telegraph.

Last year, more than 500 families in the Lee County area applied whose income was under the poverty level. I see the same thing again this year, so all donations are greatly appreciated.

May God bless you, and have a Merry Christmas.
