Mooseheart ineligible; players can play

The IHSA executive board ruled Monday that, while three recruited players will be allowed to compete for Mooseheart High School in Batavia, the school is placed on probation.

The board found that the Sudanese students were taken advantage of by A-Hope Foundation and overturned the previous decision that Manguisto Deng, Makur Puou, Hakim Nyang and Wal Khat be ineligible. The board noted the students have previously served a 365-day period of ineligibility.  

Mooseheart will be ineligible to participate is the 2013 state basketball tournament.


Cowboys WR Bryant might need surgery

The remainder of Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant’s season could be in jeopardy because of a finger injury he sustained Sunday.

Bryant is scheduled to visit a hand specialist to determine if he will require season-ending surgery.

League flexes
49ers-Seahawks game

The San Francisco 49ers’ game at the Seattle Seahawks on Dec. 23 has been moved to NBC’s Sunday Night Football as part of the league’s flex scheduling.

The Chicago Bears’ game at Arizona will remain a 3:25 p.m. start.

Redskins QB Griffin

Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan updated the status of quarterback Robert Griffin III on Monday and said the rookie has a Grade I sprain of the lateral collateral ligament.


League scraps games through Dec. 30

The NHL canceled games through Dec. 30 on Monday, bringing the total of missed games to 526 since the lockout began Sept. 15.

No new labor talks are scheduled.


Western Kentucky hires Petrino

Western Kentucky hired Bobby Petrino, who was fired by Arkansas in April for a “pattern of misleading” behavior following a motorcycle accident.

Petrino had a 34-17 record at Arkansas and 75-26 overall in eight seasons as a college head coach.

Petrino had an affair with former Razorback volleyball player Jessica Dorrell, who he later hired as a football assistant had gave $20,000 in gifts. Petrino said initially he was the only person on the motorcycle but later admitted to Dorrell’s presence.
