OHS hosts its first Relay for Life

OREGON – Oregon High School students raised $12,000 for the American Cancer Society during their Relay for Life Dec. 5 at Blackhawk Center.

They walked a 6-hour marathon; and honored and remembered 129 people affected by cancer during a luminaria ceremony.

Students also participated in service projects. They raised more than 100 pounds of rice on freerice.com to help end world hunger, made hundreds of cards for nursing home residents and overseas military personnel, and 105 fleece scarves for the Village of Progress and the local clothes closet.

Fifty-six holiday care packages and more than 1,000 cookies for troops and 50 holiday wreaths for a nursing home were prepared.

They also shared morning laps with Oregon fourth-graders who are learning the value of philanthropy and service in their classrooms.

Relay supporters include Mark Tremble of Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Homes, Dave Nelson of 1st Farm Credit Services, Gary Davis and Chris Mueller with Country Financial, Kable Distribution, Brian Bemis Auto Mall, the Oregon Chapter of Rotary International, and Oregon Junior Tackle Football, all in Oregon; White Pines Inn in Mount Morris; Scott Tilton and Ashley Hoelzer of First National Bank and Trust Co. in Rochelle; and Ralphie & Lulu’s and Cliff’s Donuts Plus More, both in Ashton.
