DIXON – Larry Russell Smith, 64, of Dixon, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at his home after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. He was an accountant at Raynor for 24 years before his retirement.
Larry was born Dec. 13, 1947, in Dixon, the son of Russell H. and Hazel L. (Foreman) Smith. He married Donna Rae Reitzel on May 7, 1997, in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
While attending Sauk Valley Community College, Larry was a member of the college’s first men’s basketball team. He later graduated from Northern Illinois University. Larry also was a women’s volleyball coach at SVCC, as well as an assistant coach for the AFC Raiders’ volleyball team. Larry served in the Navy from 1967-72, and was a Vietnam War veteran. He was a member of American Legion Post 296 in Sterling. Larry enjoyed watching NASCAR races, Chicago Bears football games, camping, fishing and spending time with his children and granddaughter.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Rae Smith of Dixon; two sons, Zachary Russell Smith of Park Forest and Joshua A. Bacon of Dallas; two daughters, Kaitlyn Madonna Smith of Franklin Grove and Sherryl L. Bacon of Dixon; one brother, Gene Carden of Greenville, N.C.; one sister, Sheri Linker of Polo; one granddaughter, Jazmine Marie Kozlowski of Dixon; and several nieces and nephews.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Wendy Marie Smith; and his nephew, Michael Carden.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., with a memorial service at 7 p.m., Wednesday at Preston-Schilling Funeral Home in Dixon. Military honors conducted by the Dixon combined veterans group will follow the memorial service.
