Sterling senior wrestler Joshua Villarreal is already signed up for the Marines.

I hear you’re headed into the Marines. Where do things stand with that?

Tuesday and Wednesday I was in Milwaukee and I took my tests and had my physical and signed my contract. So, I’m officially a Marine.

What will your job be in the Marines?

I’ll be an aircraft mechanic.

When does all this get started?

My ship date is July 29. I’ll go to San Diego for basic and combat training. My schooling for my job will be in Pensacola, Fla., for 6 to 9 months. After that it’s up to the Marine Corps where I go.

Are you at all concered about getting into a bad situation?

No. I embrace that. It seems like a challenge.

Do you plan on being a Marine for life?

I would like to. Retire at 39 with full benefits and great job references. I could get almost any job I want.

You’re also a football player and thrower in track. What else are you interested in?

I play in the percussion section in the band. I play the drum set for the pep band. I play a bunch of instruments. When jazz band comes around, I can play the bass and the guitar.

Any other football players or wrestlers in the band?

There’s only one other football player, and he plays tuba. There’s no other wrestlers.

Ever in a garage band?

I used to have one, but once I hit high school, I had to pick and choose what I did. I picked sports and the school band and my school work over having a band.

What was the band’s name?

Shock Wayve. It was when I was in middle school. We played at Poopy’s [in Savanna], the Moose Club here, the Latin American Club ... we went to Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Amboy and played in a battle of the bands, and we won it.

What kind of music did your band play?

Classic Rock from the ’90s and before. Stuff like 38 Special, Pantera and Guns N’ Roses.

What did you play?

Drums and keyboard.

Favorite bands?

Led Zeppelin, Red Hot Chili Peppers, AC/DC. They’re the ones that influenced me and got me interested in doing stuff like that.

Favorite movies?

The Sound of Music and Grease. I love those musicals. I’m weird like that. I’m looking forward to getting the new album that Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta just made.
