Ruling allowing jurors to hear dad’s confession stands

DIXON – Charles T. George, charged with shaking his infant daughter to death in 2010, lost his bid to appeal a court’s decision allowing jurors to hear his apparent confession.
Lee County Public Defender Bob Thompson said Thursday that the state Supreme Court has declined to hear the appeal filed by George’s appellate public defender.
His next pretrial conference is Jan. 3.
George, 35, of Dixon, is charged with two counts of aggravated battery of a child, aggravated domestic battery, and involuntary manslaughter.
Police say he shook his 3-month-old daughter, Tamari, on Sept. 17, 2010, and dropped her on the floor. She died 5 days later at a Rockford hospital.
Thompson argued last year that George’s confession to police was inadmissible because he made it after he “clearly and unequivocally” asserted his right to remain silent.
Lee County Circuit Judge Ron Jacobson agreed and tossed the confession.
Prosecutors appealed, and the appellate court reversed Jacobson’s ruling on Aug. 22.
