New law extends candidate filing deadline

Those who have taken out petitions for Morrison city offices in April’s election as of Nov. 26 are: Mayor: Sarah Thorndike, David Jindrich, Marti Wood and Bob Snodgrass; Ward 1 alderman: David Zigler, Cheryl Bush and Jim Britt Sr.; Ward 2 alderman: Brian Zigler, Nancy Riggen; Ward 3 alderman, Curt Bender; ward 4 alderman (4-year term), Michael DeSpain; Ward 4 (2-year unexpired term): No candidate yet.

Schroeder has filed for re-election as city clerk.

Sterling’s filing deadline already passed Nov. 26 because the city has a city manager form of government, City Clerk Marie Rombouts said.

Two Sterling alderman at large positions are up for re-election, for which four candidates filed: John Stauter, Christopher Schuchard, Linda Marley and Javier Padilla, Rombouts said.

Dixon has no offices up for reelection in April, City Clerk Kathe Swanson said.

Drill

It was easy to get distracted by the performance of it all. The active shooter drill held by Sterling and County Police last week at the high school. The scenario; two armed shooters in the school killing students and teachers and the police and medical technician's response. It's an unfortunate drill, but a necessary one. In the hallways a Halloween mentality took over, especially when the ketchup-blood concoction was applied on the students. Small talk and "what I'm going to do" plans were passed around freely between laughs and odors of the sickly sweet blood stand-in.
