CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois state Sen. Donne Trotter's defense attorney says the veteran lawmaker deserved reasonable bond because of his decades of public service.

A Cook County judge set bond at $25,000 on Thursday for Trotter, who was arrested Wednesday morning at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport for trying to bring a firearm onboard an aircraft. Trotter defense attorney Joshua Harman said at a bond hearing that Trotter has dedicated his life to the people of Illinois. Harman also cited Trotter's 26-year marriage and four children.

Trotter told police he uses the gun for his job at a security firm and forgot it was in his bag. Prosecutors say Trotter has a permit to carry the gun to and from work. Prosecutors also say the gun is registered, but not in Chicago.
