Published: Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012 1:15 a.m. CST

DIXON – Local writers are sought to enter the Phidian Art Club’s 25th annual Literary Competition for poetry, fiction and nonfiction.

The competition is open to any writer – professional or nonprofessional – age 17 or older by March 1, who lives within a 35-mile radius of Dixon.

Only one entry per category is allowed. Categories include poetry, any form, 30-line limit; fiction, 3,500-word limit; and nonfiction 3,000-word limit.

The fee is $8 per entry. Checks should be made payable to Phidian Art Club.

All entries must be original and unpublished. They should be typed, double-spaced, on one side of 8.5-by-11 inch paper. Each entry must have a cover sheet that lists the title of the piece, the category and the author’s name, address, phone number and e-mail address.

Manuscript pages should have only the title and page number on the top of each page. The author’s name and identifying information should not appear on the manuscript pages.

Fiction and nonfiction entries must show the word count on the upper right corner of page one.

Contest requirements should be followed carefully before submission.

Rules will be available at local libraries as well as from Dixon Public Library at www.dixonpubliclibrary.org; The Next Picture Show at www.thenextpictureshow.org; the City of Dixon at www.discoverdixon.org; www.saukvalley.com for Sauk Valley Media.

Writers must submit a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage to have the manuscript returned. Judges often include helpful remarks with manuscripts. The Phidian Club is not responsible for lost or damaged material.

Entries must be postmarked by March 1. Mail or hand-deliver them to Phidian Art Club c/o Dixon Public Library, 221 S. Hennepin Ave., Dixon, IL 61021.

In each category, cash prizes will be awarded – $50 for first place, $35 for second place and $25 for third place – if there are at least three entries in each category or if a work merits an award.

Doris Isgrig will provide poetry prizes, in memory of her late husband, Erik Isgrig; Books on First in Dixon will cover fiction prizes; and Sauk Valley Media will give nonfiction awards. Honorable mentions may be given in the poetry category.

A bound volume of winning entries from previous competition is available at Dixon Public Library.

Winners will be notified in mid-April. The Phidian Extraordinary Literary Event will honor them at 2 p.m. April 28 at Dixon Public Library. First-, second-, and third-place winners in all categories will read their entries.

The public is welcome. Refreshments will be served.

The committee includes Ann Edmonds, chairwoman; and Catherine Rogers, Marilyn Coffey and Sharon Callaghan.
