DIXON – Sauk Valley Community College will provide free adult education courses starting Jan. 14.
These classes prepare students to complete their General Education Development test, to improve or develop skills in areas such as reading, writing and math, focus on career training, and higher self-esteem to lead to the workforce or a college education.
They are open enrollment; students can join anytime. It is recommended students start as soon as possible.
The classes will be in:
Dixon: from 9 to 11 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 421 S. Peoria Ave., and from 5 to 7 p.m. at SVCC, 173 state Route 2.
Sterling: from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the state Department of Employment Security office, 2323 E. Lincolnway, and from 9 to 11:45 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at St. Mary Parish, 600 Avenue B.
Rock Falls: from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Rock Falls Middle School, 1701 12th Ave.
Students can prepare to complete their GED, improve or develop skills in reading, writing and math, and focus on career training.
English as a second language courses will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at YWCA of the Sauk Valley, 412 First Ave., Sterling; from 9 to 11:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at St. Mary Parish; and from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Rock Falls Middle School.
SVCC’s Community Learning Lab is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, with an instruction coach on duty. The lab is for high school and adult students who would like help in academic areas. Programs include KeyTrain for workforce skills, MyFoundationLab covering writing, reading and math, and Achieve 3000, a literacy improvement program.
