DIXON – Edward Owen Burke, 78, of Dixon, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford.

He was born Nov. 21, 1934, in Amboy, the son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Antoine) Burke.  

Ed was a farmer for many years in the Maytown and Walton areas. He held positions with many organizations, including United Parcel Service of Freeport, Albrecht Grain Company of Harmon, Eldena Co-op, Anchor Coupling of Dixon and BorgWarner of Dixon. He currently was manager at Premier Wash in Dixon.

He married Lucella “Lu” Morrissey on May 7, 1955, in Walton. Ed was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dixon and the Lee County Democrats. He was very active with his large family and many friends. He was known for his wonderful sense of humor and was cracking jokes right to the end. He was very proud of his wife, kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.

Survivors include his wife, Lu, of Dixon; 10 children, Julie (Scott) Helfrich, Terry (Ron) Hicks, Dan (Sandy) Burke, Joe (Asami) Burke and Pat (Tim) Oliver, all of Dixon, Sue (Randy) Kaiser of Hampton, Ted (Carol) Burke of Poplar Grove, Mag (Diana) Burke of St. Charles, Molly (Mike) Baerson of Buffalo Grove and Jennifer (Luke) Lefever of Elkhart, Ind.; 33 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; siblings, Sister Regina Johnson, S.L., of Nerinx, Ky., Dan (Vivian) Burke of Dixon and Elizabeth (William) Widolff of Rock Falls; and sister-in-law, Darlene Burke of Mendota.

He was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Emily Cullen; a great-grandson, Andrew Tobin; two sisters, Mary Ellen (John) Murray and Margaret “Peg” (Nate) Friel;  two brothers, Joseph (Doris) Burke and Francis Burke; brother-in-law, Clarence Johnson; and sister-in-law, Mary Jean Burke.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. with the rosary recited at 7:30 p.m., Friday in the Holloway Center at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with cremation rites accorded following the Mass. Burial of cremains at a later date at St. Michael Cemetery in Sandy Hill. Jones Funeral Home in Dixon handled arrangements.

Wise saw collapse in support

Last week, Sterling Alderwoman Amy Viering attended her last meeting as a city official. She gave the usual praise one hears at such departures. But one compliment stuck out. At the end of her speech, she turned to City Administrator Scott Shumard and said, "You're awesome."
