PROPHETSTOWN – Cragel’s, a newly opened bar in Prophetstown, has something in common with Cheers: Everybody knows your name, owner Craig Hagel said.
And everyone can easily talk to each other because of the rectangular bar, original to the renovated building, he said.
“You can talk across to people, you can talk to people next to you, and everybody’s like a family. In a small town like this, everybody does know your name. That’s the cool part. There are some Norms here.”
Craig and his wife, Kelly Hagel, bought and renovated the bar at 345 Washington St., closed since July 1. They reopened Nov. 17.
The couple “high-teched” the former Square One bar, which has been in the Hagel family since 1902. They added four 50-inch HD TVs, digitized the jukebox and added a new “awesome” sound system, Kelly said.
They also installed a new porcelain tile floor, added new fixtures in the bathrooms, and renovated the wiring and the plumbing.
The number of beers on tap has gone from zero to three: Blue Moon, 312 and Bud Light. Tapped beer can also come in a frosty mug option. The renovated bar has new window seating so you can look out onto Washington Street while sipping a cold one.
Niccoli’s, a Mexican restaurant that opened Oct. 25, will deliver to the bar.
For now, there’s a free Foosball table sitting on the stage, but the Hagels also plan to bring in a variety of musical acts to entertain customers.
The building has been a hardware store, a bowling alley, and a tavern. It’s been in the family since 1902.
At one time it was called Brewer’s Tap, owned by Craig’s grandfather, Buel Brewer. Craig’s father, Bill Hagel, owned it from 1949 to 1982, when it was Bill’s Place. Craig’s sister and brother-in-law, David and Jacki Roman, owned it as Square One from 1982 to 2012.
Craig and Kelly bought the building in August and named the bar in honor of Craig. Craig, 56, graduated from Prophetstown High School in 1974; Kelly, 51, in 1979. They have lived in Prophetstown for 33 years.
Cragel’s will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily. Find the bar on Facebook or call 815-989-6018 for more information.
