What are your main products or services? Tax preparation.

Tell us a little about yourself. My name is Aaron Propheter. I am 34. I grew up in Dixon. I attended St. Anne School and graduated from Newman Central Catholic High in 1995 and Bradley University in 1999.

Tell us about your family. I have been married to my wife, Tara Propheter, for 11 years. She teaches math for Rock Falls Middle School. We have two children, AJ, 5, and Anna, 2, who receive most of my time as a stay-at-home dad.

What makes your business special? Propheter Financial is completing it’s second tax season. I began preparing taxes after working for my mother-in-law, Teresa McCue, at her business, McCue Tax and Accounting in Sterling.

I began to have friends ask me to do their taxes and it has grown from there to requiring an actual office rather than my dining room table. I still do work for McCue Tax when I have free time from my clients. My pricing averages out at $75 a return and is based on time rather than form.

I accept drop-offs or will process the return during an appointment while you watch and interact through a second screen. Many of my clients enjoy this feature because it draws them more into the process and they leave with a better understanding of how their income and deductions shape the refund.

What’s new? In January, I sat for the new Registered Tax Return Preparer test, and I recently received notification that I passed. This test is the main hurdle now for new tax preparers. In the past, no testing was required to be a paid preparer.

Also, the property that includes my office was rezoned for commercial use, and I now have signage, landscaping and blacktop.

Watch where you sit

On Tuesday, the Lee County Board voted 12-9 to approve a proposed wind farm in the southwestern part of the county. That happened after 27 sessions of a public hearing held by the Zoning Board of Appeals. Is everyone wiser for it?
