STERLING – A Sterling man accused of shooting another man earlier this month was arrested this morning in Chicago, police said in a news release this afternoon.

U.S. Marshals arrested Octavius L. Zackery, 35, at 8:30 a.m. at a relative’s home on a warrant charging him with aggravated battery with a firearm that was issued Nov. 21.

He is in Whiteside County Jail pending a court appearance.

About 9:32 p.m. Nov. 17, police were called to Sixth Avenue and East Fifth Street on a report of shots fired and found a 29-year-old Sterling man who apparently was intoxicated and had been shot in the pelvis. He was taken to CGH Medical Center, where he was treated then checked himself out, police said.

Zackery’s name came up that night as a possible shooter, and the victim, who initially refused to cooperate with the investigation, also identified him, Sterling Police Detective Sgt. Steve Hubbard said.

The two men were acquaintances who apparently got into an argument that quickly escalated, Hubbard said, declining to say what the fight was about. The incident does not appear to be gang-related, he said.

Police found a 9 mm bullet casing at the scene that has been sent to the state police crime lab in Rockford. No gun has been found, he said.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
