Whether or not you’re interested in modern music, the news from YouTube over the weekend was noteworthy.

As of Saturday, “Gangnam Style,” a song performed by Psy, a South Korean rapper, had been viewed 805 million times – a viewing record for the worldwide video website.

Psy beat out Justin Bieber’s “Baby,” which had been viewed 803 million times as of Saturday.

YouTube is a popular online venue for entertainment, of course. While musicians Psy and Bieber make news for having huge YouTube viewership, news organizations also post videos.

Not too long ago, Sauk Valley Media recorded its 1 millionth view on YouTube. As of Tuesday, we stood at 271 news and sports videos posted with 1,005,978 views.

You won’t find music videos on Sauk Valley Media’s channel, but you will find several videos about music.

A video about Mumford & Sons’ visit to Dixon in August attracted 6,680 views. A video about Gina Venier’s victory in a singing contest has 2,153 views.

Over the past year, videos about the Rita Crundwell scandal captured significant attention. A video of Crundwell’s Dixon ranch had 13,471 views. The tour of Crundwell’s home attracted 7,021 views. A press conference regarding the case has 6,153 views. A video from the Crundwell auction has 2,768 views.

Videos from trials attract viewership. A video of the judge reading the verdict in the Nicholas T. Sheley murder trial has 1,458 views. A video of the judge reading the verdict in the Patti Mock trial has 1,059 views.

Sporting events also snare viewers. Videos from football games this fall have been popular. A video from the Morrison-Newman football game has 1,591 views, while the Amboy-Mercer County football game video has 1,243 views.

Hard news attracts an audience. A video made when fire damaged some Sterling apartments has 1,040 views. Two videos posted after GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum visited Dixon have 556 combined views.

But videos that warm the heart hold two of the top three spots.

A video that chronicles the 1644th Transportation Company’s joyful return to Rock Falls has 11,110 views.

Even better, a video, posted last December, of a returning soldier surprising his daughter at East Coloma School has an incredible 846,612 views!
