STERLING – Carmen Cantu, 72, formerly of the area, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

She was born Sept. 16, 1940, in Alexandria, La., the daughter of Secundino and Conception (Martinez) Hernandez.

Survivors include her daughters, Mary Garcia of Sterling, Maria (Michael) Helfers of Wisconsin and Trenida Cantu of Lincoln; her sons, Federico Cantu, Atanacio Cantu, Francisco Cantu and Nacho Cantu Hernandez, all of Rock Falls; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her former husband, Francisco Cantu; her parents; two brothers, Paul Roy and Chrispin Hernandez; two sons, Peter Miniel and Michael Hernandez; and a grandson.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., followed by the Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling, with the Rev. Juan Ayala, celebrant, officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling.  McDonald Funeral Homes handled arrangements.
